A common problem I had when decompressing .zip archive files from clients, using Mac OS X 10.8 or earlier:
There’s usually no problem with the decompressed file content itself, but Japanese file names often become mojibake (garbled text).
What solves the problem for me is using the right decompression tool. Apple’s built-in Archive Utility often gave me trouble. The freeware app The Unarchiver, meanwhile, seems to unzip Japanese file names without injury.
